This is my site for links to Genuine Free Stuff as well as some useful advice. I use most of these programs regularly. It's good gear. It's all worth having.

** April 2014. Major revamp and update for relevance happening, especially now that support for Windows XP has ended, and now that we all are addicted to our Android phones. A lot of old stuff is going.

This post in particular started this whole website...

I have been building and using computers since about the Ice Age, from DOS 3 through to Windows 7.
I have been mucking about with mobile phones for quite some time, using Symbian S60 and then Android.

Press F8 at boot to start in safe mode - Windows XP and 7
To see the details of you computer, download, install and run 'Speccy' - shows Operating System, Firewall, Anti-virus and hardware.
If you think you have a virus, start here 'Free Online Virus Scan'. Try any or all, and be patient.

Best free finance Android apps for HTC, Sony and Samsung phones. Currency Exchange Rates and Gold Price.

Here's my finance apps I've just loaded onto my HTC, Sony and Samsung phones.
Currency Exchange, Gold Prices, Google Finance.

I like to keep an eye on currency exchange rates and the price of gold.
I have a few shares in a gold miner called Silver Lake Resources, you see.
https://www.google.com/finance?q=ASX:SLR

I tried quite a few Currency Exchange apps and settled on this one as the clearest, simplest and easiest to read.
Same with the Gold Price app. I tried five or six, but settled on this one as just what I want.

Here's the link - Exchange Rates
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.xelnaga.exchanger

I have set my home currency to Aussie Dollars of course (AUD) and also locked in the USD, IDR, Euro and gold price XAU.

I also use the XE Currenct exchange app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xe.currency

Here's the link to Gold Price Live if it interest you. Might be good when the party gets boring and you need a conversation starter.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.goldprice.app

I also use Kitco Gold Prices
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kitco.android.free.activities

I'm also a big fan of Google Finance for my share prices.

Not rich yet. Cheers. Si.

Web Browsers for Windows XP, Windows 7 and Android - April 2014

Here's a list of web browsers that I use on my Windows XP and Windows 7 desktop PCs, as well as my Android phones.

For Windows desktop PCs or laptops.

You may be used to using Internet Explorer and have never tried anything else, but maybe it's time for a change. You really have nothing to lose by trying out a new web browser.
You can download and install three or four and just swap between them.

I have Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera and Google Chrome all running.
I usually use Google Chrome because I love all the add-ons and for syncing my Contacts and Calendar from my PC to my phone.
I use Opera to check that my websites look good across all browsers.
I use Internet Explorer for its Citrix ability for virtual application access.

Google Chrome Web Browser.
https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/

Here's the link to Google Chrome Extensions.
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/extensions

Chrome is my main web browser on my desktop PCs. I constantly use the Google Calendar and Contacts to sync my life to my phone and workplaces.

*** A really good tip is to make entries that repeat monthly for various things, such as all your house bills. Chrome gives me the ability to put a huge amount of text in one calendar entry.
I have one huge entry for all my house details, including rent, insurance, taxes, rates, purchase date, bank loans and so on. I can always find it whenever I need it, on the 4th of any month.

I have another monthly entry for all my phone plans for the family. When they were started, what they cost, when we broke all those phones, account numbers, and so on.

I have a monthly entry for all my major purchases - just date, what they were and what they cost. It's been surprisingly useful.

Opera
http://www.opera.com/

I use this occasionally to check my websites.

Internet Explorer
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-au/internet-explorer/download-ie

I use Internet Explorer for its Citrix ability for virtual application access.

Firefox
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/products/

I confess I haven't used Firefox for a few years after all those rapid changes. It wouldn't even work on my Windows XP box for a while.

For Android phones.

Google Chrome Web Browser - link to Google Play Store
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.android.chrome

I use Chrome as my secondary browser on my phone. I prefer Opera Mobile.

Opera Mobile
http://www.opera.com/mobile or this link for Android
http://www.opera.com/mobile/android

Opera Mobile is my main browser on my phone. I just prefer how it looks and handles.

Firefox - link to Google Play Store
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.mozilla.firefox

UC Web Browser - link to Google Play Store
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.UCMobile.intl

I use this to check the mobile versions of my websites... and it's also kind of cool.

DuckDuckGo Search and Stories - link to Google Play Store
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.duckduckgo.mobile.android

This is also kind of cool. I like the stories idea, and the anonymous browsing.

Cheers. Si. Happy anonymous browsing.

My best free Android apps for HTC, Samsung and Sony phones - August 2015

Here's my little list of good, free Android apps that I use.
I have tried and tested all of these.
I have tried similar apps as comparisons. I just happen to like these ones the best.
More than anything, this is my own backup list. I'm big on BACKING THINGS UP.
(You too can create a blog like this in about 4 easy steps, for no other reason than to back up your links, photos, documents, whatever you want.)

Please note, you will NOT find any Facebook stuff here. No games either.

Here we go then. Links straight to the Android market. Blue text is not links, just highlight.

3G Watchdog, to monitor my data use.
I have now found I don't need this with latest versions of Android as there is a built in data usage monitor in Phone Settings
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.rgruet.android.g3watchdog

Adobe Reader if it isn't there already.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.adobe.reader

AdSense. I have a few blogs and a few videos on YouTube which host Google Ads. I make a tiny amount of money from this. I use the AdSense app to keep track of my AdSense account.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.ads.publisher

App Freeze - to freeze unwanted apps on my root access phone. * Only useful if you have rooted your phone and have super user access. Say goodbye to Google Play Services draining 60% of battery. If you want to 'root' your phone, try the Kingo Root website. It's easy but will VOID your warranty on your phone. Read more on my post "How do I root my phone" and scroll down to the bit about Kingo Root.

I have always had "Sync is currently experiencing problems." on my phones. This handy little app is a very quick fix to an old problem.

I can choose from a huge range of widgets, and it will sync to Google Calendar. Make sure you select Google Calendar from your main Google account as the calendar to show. Same in the native calendar app. ( Not PC Sync Calendar, for example.)

My Home Button. Top marks for the bright person that wrote this app.
*** All of you who have an Android phone with a broken Home key, grab this app. It puts a Home key in the pull down notification panel. I now put this app on all my phones as it makes it very easy to back out off apps that require multiple taps of the Back button.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=wq.myhomebutton&hl=en

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mysms.android.sms

On this note, always have a link to Settings>Applications>Running Services on your desk top. If you find that a game keeps running after you've exited it, my advice is to uninstall it.

My Widgets (which show real time data changes, as opposed to shortcuts to apps).
This is for my info really.
Quick Battery. Jorte 1x1 and 4x4. Moon Phase 3D. 3G Watchdog. TerraTime.

No games. I find too many games stay running after I have finished playing, draining battery. Always keep a shortcut on your desktop to Settings>Applications>Running Services, and uninstall anything that stays running when you don't want it to. Did I say that before ?

Android Live Wallpapers for HTC, Samsung and Sony phones - April 2014

Here's the latest thing I mess around with on my Android phone. Live wallpapers.
Live wallpapers are hard to find in the 'good' and 'free' bracket.
These are the best I've sampled and actually use.
Note that these things chew up your battery life and RAM.

My favorite is actually just a pure black "No Wallpaper" for that elegant look and to save power and RAM. Here's the link -
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sapps.android.NoWallpaper

Or this one of the same name "No Wallpaper"...
Here's the link -
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=no.wallpaper

On that note, if I want a plain colored wallpaper, I use the "Colors" app to change to a plain background color.
Here's the link -
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.citc.colors

I also use a couple of live wallpapers that show system specs.
One is "Mobile Info Live Wallpaper".
Here's the link -
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.zeg.livewall.zeg103140

The other is "Device Info Live Wallpaper". There's a free and paid version.
Here's the link -
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.main.kurousa.android.livewallpaper.DeviceInfo

Now for the best live wallpaper ever... "The Matrix"
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=simosoftprojects.matrixlivewallpaper

I am also rather partial to Terratime. This can be set to show the sun sweeping across the planet as a live wallpaper.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.daylightclock.android.license

I also drop in Bamboo Forest, now and then. It's free. It's very pretty.
There's a paid donation version as well of course, but the free is all you need
Here's the link -
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=fishnoodle.bamboo_free

Android offline dictionaries for HTC, Samsung and Sony phones - April 2014

Here's my latest find. I've just been over to Bali and was looking for offline dictionaries. They're kinda hard to find.
I found a few that may suit your needs for French, English and Italian and maybe a few other languages.

Here's the links - .

Offline Dictionaries.
Free, and there's a Pro for a small price.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=fr.nghs.android.paid.dictionnaires

Download the app and then download the libraries you want.
Maybe hitch a free ride on someone's WiFi, or jack into your computer at home for these downloads.

.

QuickDic Offline dictionary
Free and with a pretty cool and geeky interface. Created by a coder with little time for a pretty interface, but it works and it like it.
Good for English, German, Italian.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hughes.android.dictionary

Bahasa Dictionary - Indonesian / English
Free.
Works offline after downloading library.
Good if you are heading off to Bali to chill out.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gits.bahasa

Try those. See how you go. Ciao. Sampai lagi.

Speaking in tongues. Cheers. Si.

Android sky, star, planet and stargazer apps for HTC, Samsung and Sony phones - April 2014

Here's my latest toy for my Android phone. I like apps about planets and moons and stars.
These Android apps will show you a picture of the night sky on your screen and show you the constellations, where the planets are and what satellites are flying overhead.

Here's the links...

Google Sky Map
Free of course. Easy to use. Fun.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.stardroid

Satellite ARL
Free. Quite interesting to see if you can pick out the ISS.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.agi.android.augmentedreality

.
There's a bit of trivial fun. Now head away from the city lights and see what you can find.

Also try Star Chart...

I have also tried Planet Finder

Best free Android app for Notes, Notepad and Note Sync for HTC, Samsung and Sony phones - April 2014.

Buzz buzz. I've gone Android at last.
The trusty old Nokia E63 has gone back in the box as my back-up. I've scored a shiny new HTC Desire HD.

I needed the Best Free App.
None of that Facebook and Twitter stuff, I needed to organise my Notes.

One thing I miss from all my Nokia phones is the 'Notes' facility.
I had thirty or so with various bits of information, shopping lists and bright ideas.
I could back them up onto my computer as text files.
This is one big application that seems to be missing from Android handsets.

So I went searching in the market for a good Note app. I tried quite a few but settled on just two.

Colornote Notepad - this one turned out to be the best for my needs.
I tried quite a few others and have since deleted the links form this post. Grab this one.

Evernote. Here's the link. This is the best one ever and has become indispensable.

This greatest thing about Evernote is that I can sync my notes on the phone with my computer.
If I change a note on the phone it also updates and syncs to my computer and vice versa. Yay.

This is it running on my main frame at home. That's just two of my many notes.

This is a screen shot I've taken from their page in the Android Market.

I can take a photo note or write a text and edit them easily.
I can update my notes on my PC at home and they will sync to my phone. That's clever.
This one truly is the 'Best Android App.'

I will remind you one more time. Back Up Your Computer Now.

Cheers. Si.

Best free File Managers for Android phones - HTC, Samsung and Sony phones - April 2014

Buzz Buzz. I've gone Android.
Sigh, I've finally moved on from Nokia phones with Symbian operating systems.
I've put away the trusty Nokia E63 and scored me a new HTC Desire HD.

The old... The new ...

If you Google search "best free apps for Android or HTC Desire HD" you will find all sorts of things... blah blah Facebook, blah blah Twitter. Blah blah blah.

What I really needed was a File Manager because Android doesn't seem to do File Managers like the good old Symbian phones had.

My phones have always been my mobile office, carrying all my contacts and photos, most of my important Word and Excel documents, and quite a lot of various PDF files.

A quick search of the Android Market found me these two...

Here's the link 1 - ES File Explorer

Here's the link 2 - ASTRO File Manager
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.metago.astro

I am still testing both and use both for slightly different things.
Both do want I want. Both are free.
Cheers. Si.
